SEMENJAK masyarakat kita 'diisytiharkan' berada dalam keadaan pincang, saya menjadi begitu ghairah dan kian meneliti kehidupan dan tabiat masyarakat kita dengan lebih mendalam.

Saya lihat ada segolongan masyarakat kita yang belum lagi berusaha atau cuba memperbaiki diri mereka demi kebaikan mereka sendiri.

Saya ingin berkongsi beberapa pengamatan yang mungkin dianggap remeh namun sebenarnya sedikit sebanyak mencerminkan sikap dan amalan masyarakat kita.

Contoh, setelah adanya badan-badan agama Islam seperti Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (Muis) dan Persatuan Ulama dan Guru-Guru Agama Islam Singapura (Pergas), masih ramai yang mudah dipengaruhi khabar yang belum tentu kesahihannya.

Lihat sahaja ancaman gempa bumi dan desas-desus tentang sijil halal Pastamania.

Ini hanya menunjukkan betapa kurang matangnya masyarakat kita. Yang menyebarkan khabar tanpa usul periksa dan yang menerimanya juga sama.

Bukankah Islam mengajar kita agar mencari kebenaran sesuatu berita yang tidak pasti sebelum membuat sebarang andaian?

Kemudian kita lihat tanggapan masyarakat kita tentang persidangan iklim yang diadakan di Copenhagen tahun lalu. Sedihnya ramai yang tidak ambil peduli.

Lihat sahaja majlis perkahwinan, para tetamu datang menjamu selera dan mengambil sebanyak mungkin makanan. Kemudian makanan itu tidak dapat dihabiskan, dibuang dan berlaku pembaziran.

Jelas kepentingan persidangan itu tidak langsung bererti di dalam masyarakat ini. Bukankah Islam itu mengajar agar jangan membazir? Adakah kita tidak berhati perut terhadap mereka yang kelaparan kerana ditimpa bencana alam dan kemiskinan?

Kemudian kita lihat perdebatan tentang Maulidur Rasul. Saya hairan melihat umat Islam bertengkar tentang perkara ini sehingga ada yang berani mengeluarkan fatwa dan hukum sendiri.

Singapura mengamalkan keharmonian kaum, bangsa dan agama. Namun di antara umat Islam sendiri pertelingkahan berlaku. Mengapa? Benar, kita mencari kebenaran tetapi cara berdakwah bukannya dengan memaksa.

Rasulullah saw mengajar kita mengongsi ilmu dengan akhlak dan hikmah. Siapakah kita untuk menentukan azab atau pahala yang diterima? Jika mahu diberi pesan dan nasihat, lakukan secara hikmah dan doa kepadanya agar dipelihara Allah swt.

Pokoknya, setiap perubahan harus bermula daripada setiap individu agar dapat menjadi contoh kepada keluarga dan teman-teman.

Jika kita tidak dapat mengubah diri sendiri, bagaimana kita dapat mengubah masyarakat kita?

Kini, pemerintah telah melakar pelbagai rancangan bagi pertumbuhan ekonomi kita bagi tahun ini dan beberapa tahun mendatang. Apakah kita akan tetap dibelenggu masalah sama dan terus terkebelakang?

Saya harap kita dapat sama-sama memikirkan dan mengambil peluang ini agar masyarakat kita dapat bangkit dan membuat anjakan minda serta memajukan diri.

Salam alaik everyone!

So sorry for the uncalled 'hiatus'. Its just that, with the recent handover of posts during AGM, we've had to sort certain things out first.

Yes, administration stuffs and the like.

Just to inform you, Taman Ilmu will commence on the..

10th of July 2009.

Yes, this time round, Taman Ilmu sessions will be held every FRIDAY @ 530 to 7 insyaAllah.

For this year, Taman Ilmu will be held as a mixture of a formal class and also a sharing session.
After every topic was brought about and elaborated by the speaker, we will form an usrah circle in which everyone is entitled to voice their opinions, ask questions and discuss on the issue at hand.

Taman Ilmu is currently undergoing a new process of having its own research team to research on the materials needed for any upcoming sessions. Reason being is that, we would like Taman Ilmu tu be self-sufficient upon its own resources instead of relying too much on asatizahs.
Asatizahs will still be invited down occassionally to share their input on various topics, insyaAllah.

So, on behalf of the Ahlul 'Ilm Intifadha (Taman Ilmu Research Team), we hope to see you on the 10th of July. Further details will be put up on this blog insyaAllah, so please do look here constantly for updates(:

Firstly, we'd like to welcome all the Muslim freshmen to SP! May Allah swt Bless your quest to seek knowledge.

Secondly, we seek your forgiveness for our long absence. It is really due to our own shortcomings that we weren't able to organise more Taman Ilmu sessions in the previous academic year. We also apologise for the lack of updates.

The 36th exco is currently busy with preparations for our upcoming Annual General Meeting, but if anyone wishes to kickstart an informal Taman Ilmu session, be it a tazkirah or an usrah or a halaqah or a tadarus Al-Qur'an session, feel free to come by our clubhouse and start one, whether or not you're a member.

We have several copies of the Qur'an, and translations as well as a collection of books on Islam if you need to refer to anything.

Oh yes, we're serious. =D

Sometimes our sessions start from an impromptu discussion, so we're okay with that =)

By the way, if you are unsure of where the Musollahs are around your schools' area (SB or MM or BE etc), please don't hesitate to ask around.

We apologise to our Kem Wajar participants for not showing you around the school due to limited time, so please do ask us if you wish to know where the Musollahs are. Insya'Allah if we have the time, we'd bring you to the Musollah personally. =)

Insya'Allah we will be reviving Taman Ilmu again this year, and we seek your support in making that possible.

Assalaamualaikum!

As Muslims, we try our best to perform deeds that we hope will ultimately please Allah swt. One of the best ways to do so is to follow the ways of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w., or better known as the Sunnah.

I think we've all done our own fair bit of research on the Sunnah through the books and the internet, and learnt quite a fair bit in the religious classes or lectures we've attended as well.

To me, it's quite pressurizing to realise the high level of conduct that Allah s.w.t Expects of us and the amount of responsibilities He Has Assigned to us.

So when I found this article, from www.fridaynasiha.com, an initiative by Young Muslims of Canada, I was reminded of why Allah is known as Ar-Rahmaan, Ar- Rahiim, the Most Gracious, Most Merciful (:

Realistic Method

The Sunnah of the Prophet, peace be upon him, does not regard people as if they were winged angels, but as human beings who eat food and live in the markets, who have their dispositions and passions, their necessities and their needs - just as they also have elevated spiritual aspirations and are elevated by them to the host of heaven.

They were created from clay and moulded mud, but also there is in them a breath from the spirit of God. Little wonder then that a human being ascends and descends, that he makes progress and he stumbles, that he is guided and goes astray, that he stands firm and he deviates, that he disobeys God and he repents.

The Sunnah makes allowance for the reality of the human being and it relents from him when he lapses into disobedience. It does not close the door in the face of repentance. Rather, it opens it wide before him so that he can knock on that door, repentant and remorseful before his Lord.

As in the hadith: "God spreads out His hands through the night so that He may accept repentance for the offences of the day; and He spreads out His hands through the day so that He may accept repentance for the offences of the night - until the sun rises in the west." [Muslim]

The Sunnah makes allowance for the different conditions of human beings, and the differences between them, whether innate or acquired. In consideration of such differences the Messenger would answer a single question from a number of persons with multiple answers - so he did not apply to an old man a ruling on the matter appropriate to a youth; or to someone in conditions of necessity a ruling appropriate to one in abundance and enjoying freedom of action. Similarly, he considered the customs of peoples and their diversity: so he let the Abyssinians play with their spears in his mosque on the day of Eid; and he let Aishah watch them from behind his shoulder.

In the same way he urged the girls to come and play with her, as a concession to her being young. So too he made lawful entertainments at weddings, and at celebrations for the return of someone long absent, and other such occasions, as a concession to the need of human beings for amusement and recreations.

Many examples of the Sunnah inform us of the realism of this divine Prophetic pattern.

We would like to take this opportunity to ask for your forgiveness if we have ever displeased you in any way as truly, all the good things come from Allah and all shortcomings are from our own weaknesses.

Let's all take the opportunity during Aidilfitri to strengthen our bonds with our families and friends, and perhaps even make new ones!

Ibn Abbas narrated,

"The messenger of Allah s.a.w. was the most generous of people, and he used to be more so in the month of Ramadhan when Jibrael (Gabriel) visited him. Jibrael used to meet him on every year in the night of Ramadhan until the end of the month.

The Messenger of Allah s.a.w. used to recite the Noble Qur’an to Jibrael, and when Jibrael met him, he was more generous than the fair wind [send by Allah s.w.t. with glad tidings (rain), referring to doing charitable deeds]" (Muslim)

10 Points for Fasting in Ramadhan

There are important points to understand while fasting the month of Ramadan in order to take the maximum benefit from the wisdom and teachings we gain in this blessed month, in which Allah sent down His last revelation, the Quran.

Consider first an important statement of our prophet Muhammad, (peace be upon him), when he said, “Don’t let the day of fasting be the same as the day you don’t fast.” He was talking about our behavior and attitude being the same whether we are fasting or not fasting and not having an effect on us. Let us keep this in mind while we consider the following ten points of fasting Ramadan, Insha'Allah.

One of our beloved teachers of Islam, Dr. Tamimi, a student of knowledge of Madinah and Dr. Jafar Idris, produced interesting and beneficial lectures about the importance and rewards of fasting Ramadan. The following is based on some of this excellent knowledge:

POINT 1: Gaining Taqwa

Allah legislated fasting for gaining taqwa,
"O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it has been prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain taqwa." (meaning of Surah Baqarah (2):183) Taqwa in this case means to make a shield between oneself and Allah’s anger and Hellfire. So we should ask ourselves, when we break our fasts, ‘Has this fasting day made us fear Allah more? Has it resulted that we want to protect ourselves from the hellfire or not?

POINT 2: Drawing closer to Allah

This is achieved by reciting and reflecting on Al-Quran during night and day, attending the taraweeh prayers, remembering Allah, sitting in circles of knowledge and, for those who can, making ‘umrah. Also for those who can, making I’tikaf (seclusion) in the last ten nights of Ramadan, so as to leave all worldly pursuits and seclude oneself in a masjid just thinking of Allah, so as to bring oneself closer to Allah. When one sins, one feels distant from Allah. That is why one might find it heard to read the Quran and come to the masjid. However, the obedient worshipper feels closer to Allah and wants to worship Allah more, because he is not shy from his sins.

POINT 3: Acquiring patience and strong will

Allah has mentioned patience more than seventy times in the Quran and has commanded patience in more than sixteen ways in His Book. So when one fasts, and gives up one’s food and drink, and one’s marital sexual relations for those hours, one learns restraint and patience. This Ummah needs men and women that are strong willed, who can stand upon the Sunnah and the Book of Allah and not waver in front of the enemies of Allah. We do not need emotional people, who just raise slogans and shout, but when the time comes to stand upon something firm, they cannot do so, they waver.

POINT 4: Striving for Ihsan (righteousness and sincerity) and staying away from riya (showing off)

Ihsan means to worship Allah as if one seeks Him, and even though one does not see Him, He sees all. Hasan al-Basri said, "By Allah, in the last twenty years, I have not said a word or taken something with my hand or refrained to take something with my hand or stepped forth or stepped back, except that I have thought before I have done any action, ‘Does Allah love this action? Is Allah pleased with this action?' So when one is fasting, one should gain this quality of watching oneself and also staying away from riya (showing off). That is why Allah said in a hadith qudsi, "Fasting is for Me and I reward it." (al-Bukhari) Allah singles out fasting from all other types of worship saying, "Fasting is for Me", because no one knows whether you are fasting or not, except Allah. For example, when one is praying or giving charity or making tawaf, one can be seen by the people, so one might do the action seeking the praise of the people. Sufyan ath-Thawri used to spend the nights and the days crying and the people used to ask him, "Why do you cry, is it due to the fear of Allah? He said, ‘No.’ They said, "Is it due to the fear of the Hellfire?" He said, ‘No. It is not the fear of Hellfire that makes me cry, what makes me cry is that I have been worshipping Allah all these years and doing scholarly teaching, and I am not certain that my intentions are purely for Allah.’"

POINT 5: Refinement of manners, especially those related to truthfulness and discharging trusts.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Whoever does not abandon falsehood in word and action, then Allah has no need that he should heave his food and drink." (al-Bukhari) What we learn from this, is that we must pay attention to the purification of our manners. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "was sent to perfect good manners." (Malik) So we must check ourselves, are we following the behaviour of the Prophet (peace be upon him)? For example: Do we give salam to those we don’t know and those we do know? Do we follow the manners of Islam, by telling the truth and only telling the truth? Are we sincere? Are we merciful to the creation?

Ramadhan Mubarak!

Assalaamualaikum!

Alhamdulillah, we have been blessed with the opportunity to greet Ramadhan again. Let us all take advantage of this month to strengthen our iman and become better Muslims at the end of it.

Here are some verses from the Qur'an and some hadith to help motivate us all (:

"O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious)."
[Al-Baqarah:183]

"The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan), he must fast that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number (of days which one did not fast must be made up) from other days.

Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allah for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him"

[Al-Baqarah:185]

"Verily! We have sent it (Qur'an) down in the night of Al-Qadr.

And what will make you know what the night of Al-Qadr is?

The night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months

Therein descend the angels and the Ruh (Gabriel) by Allah's Permission with all Decrees,

Peace! until the appearance of dawn."

[Al-Qadr]

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) addressed his companions on the last day of Sha`ban, saying,

"Oh people! A great month has come over you; a blessed month; a month in which is a night better than a thousand months; month in which Allah has made it compulsory upon you to fast by day, and voluntary to pray by night.

Whoever draws nearer (to Allah) by performing any of the (optional) good deeds in (this month) shall receive the same reward as performing an obligatory deed at any other time, and whoever discharges an obligatory deed in (this month) shall receive the reward of performing seventy obligations at any other time. It is the month of patience, and the reward of patience is Heaven.

It is the month of charity, and a month in which a believer's sustenance is increased. Whoever gives food to a fasting person to break his fast, shall have his sins forgiven, and he will be saved from the Fire of Hell, and he shall have the same reward as the fasting person, without his reward being diminished at all."

[Narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah]

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "Whoever established prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven; and whoever fasts in the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven."

[Sahih Al-Bukhari]

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)"

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

been wanting to share this story for such a looong time..
Learn from it and enjoy...

A man was on a ship when fierce storms broke out. Soon, the ship capsized and the man was thrown into the sea. After some time, he found that he was washed up, sick and exhausted, on a small and uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly everyday for God to rescue him.

The man eventually managed to build a little hut out of the wood he collected. The hut protected him from the sun and rain and he stored in it, some of his few possessions. One day however, after looking for his daily food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky.

The hut was almost all that he had left in the world, and now it was gone! The worst had happened; everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. "God, how could you do this to me!" he cried. "I pray to You everyday. I seek Your help, and yet You make this happen to me!"

Early the next day, the man was awakened by the horn of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him!

"How did you know i was here?" the man asked his rescuers in amazement. "I have been on this island for months and no ship has ever passed by close enough."

"We saw your smoke signal," they replied.

The man's burning hut was the blessing that eventually enabled his rescue. In the midst of pain and suffering, when things are going badly, it is easy to feel discouraged. But the next time our little hut is burning to the ground - remember it could be just a smoke signal, and a blessing from God.

The First Impromptu T.I. Session

Assalaamualaikum!

Last Thursday, 10 July, we had an impromptu Taman Ilmu session after we jemaah'ed our Maghrib prayers. It was the first in the history of Taman Ilmu (chey chey) but Insya'Allah it won't be the last, because it's interesting way of testing your knowledge.

So what was the topic about?

MARRIAGE :D

It was initiated by Brother Hilmi and assisted by Brother Farhan. Everyone was asked to give the age they aim to get married at and three characteristics they want in their life partners.

To summarise, the average age of marriage for everyone in that group is 27 and the three most common characteristics everyone looks out for in their life partner is patience, respect and how strong they are in their religion.

NEWS FLASH :

Not Your Usual Taman Ilmu Session

SPMLS Clubroom, 6pm, 3 July, 2008 - Inspired by the group discussions and usrah sessions held during D-Talk, the Taman Ilmu committee decided to adopt them into the most recent session as an effort to make it more fun and interactive.

The Taman Ilmu committee also had the pleasure of welcoming two brothers from NPMSS to our session.
The session started off with a role play by Brother Farhan and Brother Fahmi ala D-Talk.

The questions brought up in the roleplay were the common ones asked by non-Muslims:

Why do you need to fast? Why do the Muslim girls have to cover their head? Why do the Muslim guys need to go for Friday prayers and not the girls? Why can't you eat pork?

The session then proceeded with Brother Wak giving a short insight to what dakwah is based on what was covered during D-Talk. Everyone was then split up into three groups to discuss on what they think is dakwah, whether they think dakwah should be restricted to non-Muslims only and why, and the characteristics they think a Da'i should have.The groups then presented their discussions.

After pausing for Maghrib, the session continued with an usrah, with everyone sharing their experiences and giving tips on effective ways to dakwah as well as things to keep in mind while conducting dakwah.

Alhamdulillah, it was a success and we really thank the NPMSS brothers for making the effort to attend our session. Insya'Allah the session has been beneficial to everyone who was present and if Allah permits, our future sessions will be just as interesting. Thank you to everyone who attended it!

Ok this is actually from the first Taman Ilmu session we had for this academic year, held on 24th April. Yes, yes, almost three months late, but hey, better late than never right? :D

This is actually the notes from our head of Taman Ilmu, Brother Abdillah. More known by his 'nama glamour' : Wak (the guy in white) :D

The topic for that session was Ukhwah Amongst the Ummah.

1) Definition of Ukhwah

-In your opinion, what is ukhwah?

2) Importance of ukhwah

Has it ever crossed your mind:

Why is ukhwah extremely important in Rasulullah's (s.a.w.) community? Why is ukhwah a big deal in Islam?
How did the Muslims emerged victorious in the Battle of Badr despite having a contigent of only 300 fighting against 1000?
How is the Malay peribahasa : "Bersatu teguh, bercerai roboh" (United we stand, divided we fall) related to ukhwah?
eg: Soccer is a game of 11 people. Can we win with only 1 player?

3) Surah As-Saff, 4th Verse:

Lo! Allah loveth them who battle for His cause in ranks, as if they were a solid structure.

Sesungguhnya Allah mengasihi orang-orang yang berperang untuk membela ugamaNya, dalam barisan yang teratur rapi, seolah-olah mereka sebuah bangunan yang tersusun kukuh.

4) How to establish and strengthen ukhwah

a) Within Family

Common challenges faced:

no time to spend with family
lack of sense of belonging in the family due to problems such as family breakdown which tends to lead to a larger social problem

It's natural for humans to want to lead a happier life

Opportunities in which you can strengthen family ties:

Weddings
Death of a family member
Kenduri

b) Within the Community

Get to know your neighbours
Be involved with the community
Be aware of the people around you
Relations with non-Muslims

c) Within Friends

When you meet them, the most basic recommended thing to do: give Salam and shake hands
As a Muslim, you can help other Muslims gain entry into Heaven
Provide food, help each other out
Solat in Jemaah

5) Taking other people's feelings into consideration

Story quoted: The slander against 'Aisyah r.a.

The infamous story of the slander of 'Aisyah ra after the expedition against Bani Mustaliq where she went to answer the call of nature while the army momentarily halted. Her return to rejoin the army procession was delayed because she misplaced her necklace.

Upon her return, the army had already left, leaving her alone in the middle of the barren desert. Thankfully, a companion fron the Muhajirins stumbled upon her and brought her along on his camel. However, the hypocrites began to create slander which caused much hurt for Rasulullah saw and 'Aisyah ra. 'Aisyah protested her innocence and eventually fell ill. She went back to her father, Abu Bakr ra, while Rasulullah saw waited for divine revelation which came to acquit 'Aisyah from the malicious slander.

The above narration illustrates the seriousness of slander and how much it affected Rasulullah saw and 'Aisyah ra.

- One of the ways to maintain the ukhwah is to be aware of the way we speak. You have to know how to take other people's feelings into consideration before speaking.

Assalaamualaikum!

Alhamdulillah, another Taman Ilmu session was held today at the MLS clubroom and we had the pleasure of welcoming two brothers from NPMSS!

Insya'Allah another post about today's session will be up in a week's time, but for now I want to introduce this guy to you. During D-Talk, before it started and we were all sitting in the room, ice-breaking between ourselves, we watched another video by this guy. It was about Distractions in Salat.

I'm posting this video because the topic's quite related to Da'wah...so while waiting for the update on the session earlier ...enjoy this !!!

Btw this guy's name is Baba Ali and he's a muallaf i.e. convert. He has done a series of videos about Islam under Ummahfilms, which you can easily find at Youtube. I recommend you all to find out the videos on how and why he converted to Islam (there's two! :D)

Once in a blue moon, every Muslim would face a test of their iman and their knowledge. It's at this moment when they begin to wonder if they've learnt enough about Islam.

"Womaaaaan... why you must cover your head?"
"Eyyy brudder, can die ar if don't go for Friday prayers? And why only guys ar?"
"Haaa.... fasting month already? Eh I want to ask, why must Muslims fast?"
"Why can't you Muslims eat pork?"

And that's how the Dakwah Talk camp was born. (:

Organised by TP Nur Ikhwan, NYP Malay Students Network and Nady (An-Nadhah Youth), the camp was held at An-Nadhah for 2 nights 2 days, from 20th June-22nd June. 10 of us from SPMLS attended the camp.

Knowledgable
Sincere
Abstain from 'Ujub (perceiving yourself as better than everyone else)
Tawadhu' (humble)
Exceptional Akhlak (good behaviour)
Sufficient Knowledge
Mature
Patient, never gives up
Prioritises the principles
Forgiving and open-minded

Methods of Da'wah:

By the hand (action)
By the tongue (advice)
By the heart (hate what he/she is doing, not the person himself/herself)

This is in accordance with the hadith below:

On the authority of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, radiyallahu 'anhu, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, say:

"When any one of you sees anything that is disapproved (of by Allah), let him change it with his hand. If he is not able to do so, then let him change it with his tongue. And if he is not able to do so, then let him change it with his heart, though that is the weakest (kind of) faith."

Muslim

Effective Ways of Da'wah

1) Set aside time

Choose an appropriate time
Focus
Advice

2) Give encouragement and praise

Praise good deeds
Make use of physical touching (with respect to segregation)

3) Be an example

Become a role model
Follow and perform Allah's commands

4) Find the positive

Think positive
Start off your advice to someone by telling him the positive aspect of his deed

5) Etiquettes of da'wah with non-Muslims

Keep in mind that you are an ambassador of Islam (ie you represent Muslims WORLDWIDE)
Don't regard their questions as insults
Be polite
Be a good example
Du'a

6) Keep in mind that it starts because of Allah and ends because of Allah

You da'wah only because of Allah, and in the end it should guide others towards loving Allah more

7) Da'wah is also to spread good deeds, behaviour and actions

*It's important to have a group of people for you to consult with and to support you when you da'wah*

Ibadah is holistic, it's not restricted to rituals

The ones who are weak in their ibadah cannot guide those who are strong
The ones who are strong in their ibadah can guide others who are strong, and the ones who are weak
The ones who are strong in ibadah, and have the right to da'wah are not necessarily restricted to the ulama' and asatizah

Aim of Da'wah:

To bring out the goodness with others (everyone is born in a state of fitrah)

"So set thy purpose (O Muhammad) for religion as a man by nature upright - the nature (framed) of Allah, in which He hath created man. There is no altering (the laws of) Allah's creation. That is the right religion, but most men know not-"

"(Setelah jelas kesesatan syirik itu) maka hadapkanlah dirimu (engkau dan pengikut-pengikutmu, wahai Muhammad) ke arah ugama yang jauh dari kesesatan; (turutlah terus) ugama Allah, iaitu ugama yang Allah menciptakan manusia (dengan keadaan bersedia dari semulajadinya) untuk menerimanya; tidaklah patut ada sebarang perubahan pada ciptaan Allah itu; itulah ugama yang betul lurus, tetapi kebanyakan manusia tidak mengetahui."

Taman Ilmu Session with Ustaz Amin

Topic: Refining Your Prayers (Menghalusi Solat)
Date: 15 May 2008

Ustaz started off the session by quoting this hadith :

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (SallAllaahu `Alayhi Wa Sallam) said, "Seven people will be shaded by Allah under His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His. They are:

(1) a just ruler;

(2) *a young man who has been brought up in the worship of Allah, (i.e. worship Allah (Alone) sincerely from his childhood),

(3) a man whose heart is attached to the mosque (who contributes to the well-being of a mosque);

(4) two persons who love each other only for Allah's sake and they meet and part in Allah's cause only;

(5) a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for an illegal sexual intercourse with her and says: I am afraid of Allah;

(6) a person who practices charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given (i.e. nobody knows how much he has given in charity).

(7) a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes get flooded with tears."

Meaning of some Islamic terms:

Syari'ah: The Way to Live; Rules

Aqidah: Belief

Fiqh: Etiquette (morals & behaviour)

Doubts in Solat:

Wudhu: wajib

Niat: recommended for each solat

Placing of hands between the chest and the navel: Sunnat

Doa Qunut: wajib according to Imam Shafie

Moving not more than 3 times: as long as your movements does not break your concentration

Pauses in Solat (ruku' and sujud): enough time to say Subhan'Allah & your mind must be at peace

Pace of solat and reciting the surah must not be too fast.

Sujud Sahwi:

Performed when mistakes are made/ certain steps were accidentally missed out while praying or when you missed a rakaat or exceeded rakaat
How to perform it:

After the final tahiyyat before the salaam, sujud twice and recite either:
Subhanalladziy laa yanaamu wa laa yashuu / Subhanalladziy laa yashuu wa laa yanaamu
[Maha suci (Allah) Yang tidak tidur dan tidak lupa / Maha suci (Allah) Yang tidak lupa dan tidak tidur || Praise Be to Allah Who Neither Sleeps Nor Forget / Praise Be to Allah Who Neither Forgets Nor Sleep]

OR what you usually recite during normal sujud

After rising from sujud, straightaway say your salaam

While in Jemaah:

Don't stand next to someone who gives off a bad odour
Don't pray in jemaah if you give off a bad odour (so as not to distract other makmum)
It is makruh (detestable) to eat onions or smoke before performing your solat
If you want to form a new saff, start from the centre
If you are praying alone and someone taps your shoulder to signal that he wants to pray jemaah with you but you don't wish to, show that you reject his request by pushing his hand away softly (tepis)

If you missed out on Al-Fatihah when you join the jemaah:
As long as you manage to join them while they ruku', it is considered that you have managed to 'catch' the rakaat (ie the Imam has recited Al-Fatihah for you)

For urgent distractions (eg your mother calling you) :
Can end solat only if there is sufficient time left for it
'End' the solat by saying your salaam

You can only Jamak fardhu prayers if you really cannot solat within the given period (i.e. only if you know you will miss e.g. Zuhur prayers that day)

- 27 pahala jika berjemaah, berbanding dengan solat bersendirian
- Di padang pasir, walaupun hanya 2 orang sahaja, dituntut berjemaah.
- Jangan memulakan bacaan sebelum dalam posisi yang berpatutan
(seperti, janganlah mula membaca tahiyat akhir sebelum duduk dengan posisi yang betul)
- Ada 13 rukun dalam solat, termasuk tertib.
- Jika berjemaah antara wanita, imam wanita tidak usah membaca dengan kuat, hanya dengan gerakan, lalu jemaah akan turut ikut.
- Jika memang sudah punyai niat untuk solat, tidak perlu lafaz dan niat ketika mengangkat takbir.
- Celak atau berupa apa sahaja yang menghalangi air wudhu untuk menyentuh kemuka tidak harus dipakai. Jika demikian, solat tidak sah.
- Sujud Sahwi dilaksanakan sebelum salam.
- Tiada Qada’ solat.
- Sewaktu dalam perjalanan (kapal) , kalau sudah masuk waktu, solat dahulu. Kalau sudah turun, solat lagi untuk menyempurnakan solat.
- Jika tahu perjalanan itu jauh, solat jamak dahulu sebelum bertolak. Kemudian, tidak usah bimbang tentang ketinggalan waktu.
- Luruskan saf solat mengikut tumit belakang, bukan jari kaki di hadapan.
- Imam itu harus lah yang paling cukup sifat antara semua. Bacaannya, umurnya dan ‘better looking’
- Sunnah untuk imam membaca surah yang pendek. Supaya jemaah tidak harus tunggu terlalu lama.
- Imam tidak seharusnya memudaratkan makmum

SOLAT JENAZAH – 4 takbir:

1) Takbir pertama- membaca surah Al-Fatihah
2) Takbir kedua – Selawat Ibrahimiah (digalakkan) atau hanya selawat biasa
3) Takbir tiga- Doa ke atas mayat
4) Takbir empat- Doa umum
5) Salam.

SOALAN-SOALAN YANG PERLUKAN KETERANGAN LANJUTAN:

1. Haruskah kita duduk untuk menghormati azan, atau cukup dengan sekadar bersenyap?

2. Jika ada hal yang penting atau kecemasan, adakah haram untuk solat sedang azan dilaungkan?

3. Adakah dibenarkan keluar dari solat jika ada kecemasan ketika solat berjemaah?
(niat mufaraqah)-niat keluar dari solat

4. Jika imam membaca surah dengan terlalu cepat, dan yang lain tidak sempat, lalu
terlepas, bagaimana?

5. Bagaimana jika solat terlalu cepat?

6. Benarkah solat Isyak digalakkan untuk dilambatkan?

7. Apa itu sujud Sahwi? (Sujud yang dilakukan kerana tertinggal dalam solat)

8. Jika di dalam perjalanan ke negeri lain, haruskah kita solat mengikut waktu Singapura atau
waktu di negeri itu. (contoh: USA, UK)

9.Solat di stadium (contoh: NDP) adakah digalakkan? (jangan biaskan membuat demikian, walaupun setahun sekali. Ini kerana keadaanya tidak darurat, dan masih boleh solat dengan sempurna)

10.Jika sedang solat jemaah, lalu ada yang menggelikan hati, bagaimana kalau semuanya terketawa?

11.Kalau sedang solat jemaah, lalu ada halangan(seperti budak kecil mengganggu dan bermain-main di daerah solat, atau duduk di atas lelapnya) apa yang harus dilakukan?

12. Apa bilal harus lakukan kalau imam dalam satu posisi terlalu lama ketika solat jemaah?

Nikah dan Perkahwinan

KAHWIN

1. Apa itu perkahwinan?
a) Akad yang menggunakan lafaz nikah, yang menghalalkan antara lelaki dengan
wanita.
b) Secara bahasa, ertinya adalah kehimpunan dan kebersamaan antara dua insan.

2. Mengapa kahwin?
a) Disunnahkan oleh Nabi
b) Dapat berpengalaman dalam berumah tangga
c) Memperkembangkan agama Islam, terutama untuk mereka yang bangsa berlainan.
(mertua dan keluarganya dapat mengetahui lebih tentang islam)
d) Manusia memerlukan teman dan pasangan

3. Hukum Perkahwinan
a) Digalakkan
b) Sunnah
c) Bergantung pada keadaan:

-Harus kalau tiada halangan untuk berkahwin
-Tidak ada tuntutan mendesak
-Memenuhi kriteria. Contoh: memberi nafkah
-Tidak harus mengikut wasiat.

4. Kahwin hukumnya wajib bagi yang:
a) Berkemampuan
b) Tidak dapat menghalangi hawa nafsu- untuk mengelakkan dari membuat maksiat.

5. Bila kahwin itu makhruh?
a) Ingin berkahwin, tetapi tidak mampu memberi nafkah kepada isteri.
b) Kaum wanita akan mengambil kesempatan

6. Bila kahwin itu haram?
a) Tidak berkemampuan lansung
b) Yang akan mendatangkan kemudaratan pada pasangannya :
contoh- menghidapi penyakit AIDS
c) Kahwin kontract.

NIKAH

Tiga perkara yang wajib:
a) Mahar (Mas Kahwin)
b) Dua wali
c) Kadi

- Mas kahwin itu tidak seharusnya wang
- Hantaran itu hanyalah sebuah hadiah
- Mas nikah tidak boleh digunakan oleh pihak lelaki
- Mengikut hadith, tiada persandingan
• Majlis perkahwinan adalah salah satunya tempay yang disukai syaitan.
• Kaum Hawa usahlah mempercantikkan diri sehingga menarik perhatian para tetamu yang hadir. Contoh: “make-up yang tebal”. Kecantikan itu seharusnya ditunjukkan kepada si suami sahaja.

TUNANG

Mengapa bertunang?
1. Untuk mengumpulkan wang yang secukupnya
2. Supaya lebih bersedia untuk berumah tangga
3. Untuk berkenalan bersama pasangannya

• Tunang hanya merupakan sebuah adat
• Tidak dibenarkan berdua-duaan walaupun sudah betunang. Ini kerana kedua lelaki dan wanita belum bernikah, bermakna, mereka bukan muhrim.
• Darjat tuning lebih tinggi dari hanya sekadar’bermatair’. Ini kerana pertunangan adalah lebih formal dan dengan pengetahuan orang tua dan keluarga.

MATAIR

- Di dalam Quran dan hadith, tidak ada perkara tentang bermatair.
- Bersentuhan fizikal antara lelaki dan wanita yang belum bernikah adalah haram. Asalkan memegang yang bukan muhrim merupakan perbuatan maksiat.

SOALAN-SOALAN YANG PERLUKAN KETERANGAN LANJUTAN

1. Apa itu kahwin contract dan apakah hukumnya ?

2. Apa itu kahwin Missha dan apakah hukumnya ?

3. Jika seorang suami sedang marah lalu menjatuhkan talak 3 kepada isterinya dengan tidak sengaja, adakah ia dikira ?

4. Nilai mas kahwin itu seharusnya disetujui oleh pasangan atau keluarga ?

5. Adakah mengambil gambar bersama, contohnya, di studio, sebelum bernikah haram?

6. Ada berberapa wanita yang menutup auratnya (memakai hijab) ketika bernikah, tetapi tidak pada hari persandingannya. Mengapa? Apa ini dibolehkan?

7. Islam menyuruh umatnya menyambut hari perkahwinan dengan mudah dan serba sederhana. Tetapi, bagaimana pula jika sebuah keluarga itu ingin menyambut perkahwinan anaknya dengan bermegah-megah kerana beliau merupakan anak tunggal?

8. Di Malaysia, jika sepasang lelaki dan wanita ditangkap haluat, imam dan uztaz akan menyuruh mereka bernikah. Adakah mereka mesti bernikah atau tiada paksaan?

9. Biasanya, sewaktu bernikah, lafaznya adalah “aku nikahkan…dengan mas kahwin..” Bagaimana pula jika dijawab dengan cara yang berbeza.
Contoh: “Adakah kau terima …. Dengan mas kahwin…..”
Adakah ini dibenarkan dan disahkan?

10. Apabila anak kepada sebuah pasangan yang sudah bercerai mahu bernikah,

Commence of Taman Ilmu 2007/2008

Assalamualaikum wrt wbrkt

The Singapore Polytechnic Malay Language Society will be commencing our Taman Ilmu sessions as of this Thursday, 7th June 2007.

Unlike last year where every session would be like a formal class, this year will be of a different concept, as indicated in the poster.

Sharing Session will be where we discuss a particular topic and share our opinions or knowledge of the topic.

Consultation is when a member of the asatizah will attend our session and Insya'Allah help to clarify uncertain points in the topic of our discussion.

Please take note that for this month that Week 2 would be a Sharing Session instead.

We hope to see you at this Thursday's session!
